When a mooring site situation warrants an alternate solution, Pioneer may recommend a Hazelett Mooring System instead of traditional anchors. A conventional mooring system employs a chain or combination of chain and nylon line to connect the anchor to a buoy. In stormy weather, a boat’s pulling action straightens the chain into a near like steel rod condition while the nylon line stretches to its maximum limit.
Hazelett Mooring Systems feature “elastic rode” technology that along with a Pioneer buoy provides a unique solution that can greatly reduce pennant loads during turbulent conditions. The Hazelett system design allows its elastic properties to absorb peak loads by maintaining a lower steady pull which also reduces yawing.
Added Security:
Hazelett Elastic Mooring Systems reduce pennant loads by more than 50% and eliminates the severe shock loads produced by conventional chain mooring systems. The system’s minimal scope requirement applies a constant lower holding force to keep the boat pointed into the wind which reduces the wind force on the boat.
Lower Maintenance Cost:
Along with greater security, lower cost of maintenance and ownership helps make an investment in a Hazelett Elastic Mooring System the smart choice for many boaters. Maintenance savings are realized from eliminating chain upkeep which reduces overall mooring expense. However, Hazelett moorings should be routinely inspected as you would any other mooring system.
Environmentally-Friendly Moorings:
Under most conditions, a traditional chain rode is dragged back and forth across the sea bottom by boat movement. If the bottom is rocky, such action also increases chain wear. Furthermore, chain dragging action disrupts and damages marine life seabed habitats. By design, Hazelett Elastic Mooring Systems are conservation moorings in the way they float above the seafloor.
As always, whenever setting up a mooring system for the first time, ask around to find out what seems to work best in your harbor.
